His fans are by admission "die hard", his critics venomous in their opposition, either way he never fails to illicit strong feelings in both.
Despite his many personal problems, Mr. Sheen has continued to work in a town where being "Blacklisted" can quite literally mean the end of your career. Mr. Sheen's many film credits are tangible proof that he has not spent all of his time in bedrooms and bars. Though I feel certain that his infamous title, "Charlie the Machine", was painstakingly earned, I feel compelled to also address his other titles, "Charlie the Actor", "Charlie the Producer", "Charlie the Director" and much to many's surprise he's also managed to add to an already impressive list of accomplishments "Charlie the Poet"and "Charlie the Writer". A closer look at this man will also show you, "Charlie the Father", "Charlie the Son", "Charlie the Friend". And yes even "Charlie the Activist". There could be no doubt he is his father's son.
Over the years Mr. Sheen has continued to practice his craft, his list of accomplishments are impressive to say the least, he's made both good films and bad, but he's made them on a almost continual basis, showing us indeed, that he does not lack in either ability or drive. Mr. Sheen's credits as an actor, among other things, include a wide variety of genres as anyone, looking at them, can attest.
He's also added to these many an ad for miscellanous products from taco's to sunglasses, lending either his voice or unmistakable face to these items. Speaking parts done by this man can be found in many a place, from Taco Bell commercials to the movie "All Dogs Go To Heaven". I don't suppose one can escape addressing his personal life without being accused of skipping over it intentionally, suffice it to say, it's been as colorful as his screen credits. Being in the public eye for so long has left Mr. Sheen with an almost nonexistent private life. His romps and the innuendo that follow them are well documented and placed on public display regularly. To actually read an article without "Bad Boy Charlie Sheen" somewhere in the text is a blessed relief for his fans and one that is all too rare.
Charlie is the 3rd child of actor, activist and just generally impressive personage Martin Sheen and not often seen in the public eye, Janet Estevez (Sheen), the brother of actor, producer and director Emilio Estevez, Ramon Estevez and Renee Estevez, the last two having film credits of their own. A very impressive list of family credits all around.
Mr. Sheen was born September 3, 1965 @10:48 p.m. in New York, NY., and was promptly named Carlos Irwin Estevez, it was not until much later that he changed his name, in his own words, "What's in a name?". Mr. Sheen, despite his brother Emilio's wish to be known as a separate entity from father Martin Sheen and carry on the Estevez name, thought it important to see the Sheen name carried on as well. Mr. Sheen has been accused countless times of taking a ride in on his father's coat tails when he chose to use the Sheen name, but as he chalked up credits of his very own, he proved himself to be an actor in his own right and left no doubt as to his own abilities.
Mr. Sheen by his own admission was not always the "Hollywood Bad Boy" he's viewed as today, it appears that brother Emilio was the high school Don Juan, Charlie, for all his charm and good looks, was not at all the ladies man and appears to have immersed himself in sports for the first part of his life, he is still, to this day, a very avid fan.
He made his first debut in "Private Slovik" at 9 years of age and has continued to grace the screen for well over 20 years of his life, not a flash in the pan by far. He tried his hand at film making at a very young age, not at all the typical child, doing 8m films with the neighborhood kids, not your average kids mind you, but personalities such as Sean and Chris Penn, Chad and Rob Lowe and of course, brother Emilo, complete with stage props all to obviously "borrowed" from the studios. The members of the "Pointe Dume Mafia", as they called themselves, would go on to prove themselves talented individuals.
Not only an actor, Mr. Sheen appears to be a collector of a wide assortment of things, antique watches, baseball memrobilia, cars and as I understand it, a rather large chunk of dinosaur. Mr. Sheen recently displayed his baseball collection at the Official All Star Cafe in Times Square , the cards, valued at $170,000, were stolen, Jeff Ballard, who's been Mr. Sheen's publicist for a number or years stated that his client was obviously upset and quoted Charlie as saying "It's a sad day when artifacts that represent the essence of this country's heart and soul are removed from a public place of enjoyment." With the knowledge we now posses of this man I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that I thought his comment may have been edited for consumption for the general public.
One of the larger surprises in Mr. Sheen's life, would obviously be his daughter, now a teenager, Cassandra. One would certainly have to wonder at his reaction to fatherhood at the ripe old age of 19, but it appears that he has every intention of being a part of his childs life which in it's self speaks for his dedication to family Charlie's feeling on the subject being made very plain, "I didn't want her to be ten and not know who her daddy was...that's the kind of stuff you go to hell for". Martin and wife Janet appear to have instilled in their children a very strong sense of blood ties and Charlie seems to have learned that lesson well.
Mr. Sheens added to his list of accomplishments in 1998, a production company in partnership with Poison's Bret Michaels. Sheen/Michaels Entertainment proved Mr. Sheen and partner Micheals to be something more then simply pretty faces. The production company is no longer a Sheen/Micheals enterprise but was responsible for movies such as "A Letter From Death Row" and was the beginnings of what looks like Mr. Sheen's venture into the business side of film making.
Mr. Sheen appears to be a roller coaster of ups and downs, but there is no doubt that he has maintained his sense of humor at even the worst of times, laughing at himself and the things around him in an almost smug way. Unfortunately his rather sharp and sometimes strikingly honest sense of humor has been fodder for the media, not always because they misinterpreted him but, sometimes, simply because taking his statements out of context, and Charlie is well known for holding nothing back, made for better print.
A more complex individual would be hard to find and one has to question at times if he even understands himself. His critics have been heard to call him "Snarly Mean", and he can indeed be very gruff, his friends and family, and yes even some of his much touted by the media ex girl friends and not to be forgotten x-wife, will tell you he's got a heart of gold and may even at times be painfully shy. So which is the real Charlie Sheen? Will we ever truly know someone simply by some articles and talk show appearances through the years and how does he view himself?
I will say that I hope the future brings us many more years of this man's talent and wit. As I sit here writing it is with the knowledge that he is currently dealing with a very subtle monster, in the form of substance abuse ,but he's gotten help and has the support of his family and friends. He is currently out of rehab and it's reported that he is seeking to continue his education and may add to his many ventures a clothes line, currently being touted as MASHEEN Wear. Our good wishes, as always, go with him, we know him to be a strong individual and there's no doubt in my mind he will yet return to offer us more of himself.
Good luck Charlie and God bless , we stand in awe of the things that you have thus far accomplished in your 33 short years and await your next venture with open arms and an unfaltering belief in your abilities.
If you have an interest in the projects Charlie has worked on in the past or may be considering in the future, you may want to check out his bio's page, I hope you enjoy the site Vonne has put together for all of us as much as I have.
